What's the keto diet?
The keto diet's becoming more and more popular in New Zealand. Many kiwis are jumping on the 'low-carb' bandwagon and seeing amazing benefits. One of the main reasons people choose the keto diet is for shifting stubborn, unwanted fat.Â
A ketogenic diet is a low-carb diet (similar to the well-known Atkins diet) except it works by sending the body into a metabolic state called ketosis. During this process, the body becomes highly efficient at burning fat.
During exercise, the body gets its energy from the carbohydrates we eat in our food. Once the body's used all of this up, it'll then begin to burn off our stored fat.Â
So, if we stop eating carbohydrates altogether, the body has no other choice but to burn fat almost immediately (the body's forced into burning it, clever right?!).Â
During this fat-burning state, the liver creates chemicals called exogenous ketones (a side effect when the body uses fat to fuel the body, rather than sugar or carbohydrates) which are used to help the brain function properly. Many people on the ketogenic diet report an improvement in their overall health, athletic performance as well as increased mental-focus and reduced hunger.Â
Ketogenic diets have many health benefits and have been shown to improve health disorders such as heart disease, epilepsy, polycystic ovary syndrome, and acne.
Another bonus of the keto diet is its ability to drastically reduce blood sugar and insulin levels, which can be life-changing for those who suffer from diabetes.
Please note, we advise you to consult with a doctor or seek medical advice before making any major changes to your diet.Â
What can I eat on the keto diet?
The great thing about the ketogenic diet is that you can still enjoy high-fat foods (in moderation, of course!) without the guilt or restrictions like many other diets. There's a wide variety of recipes on the internet you can use to create some delicious meals at home, that are full of nutrients.Â

What are the best keto supplements for weight loss?
MCT oil (Medium Chain Triglycerides)
Medium-chain triglyceride or MCT is one of the most commonly used keto supplements to support weight management.
MCTs are mostly found in coconut oil and have been proven to release hormones that keep you feeling full and assist with appetite control. MCTs can be converted into ketones by the liver and used as an efficient fuel source and source of energy for your brain cells.
MCT oil is commonly added to smoothies or used as a salad dressing - check out PureXen Keto MCT Oil.Â
